About me

Greetings, my name is Luis. I'm bilingual [English/Spanish] and I created this static website using only HTML, CSS, and Vanilla JavaScript to demonstrate, you don’t need high end frameworks to perform cool visuals in the web. One thing I learned when I was a Code Coach is that anyone can teach coding, but not everyone can do it in a way that keeps students engaged and helps them understand advanced concepts like data structures and algorithms, or web development. I had teachers in high school who were boring, but I also had ones who were passionate about their work, and I truly rooted for them. If I ever wanted to become a teacher, I would want to be like those I admired, because I believe it’s important to be passionate and to understand your students. Many people overlook the skills and potential of their kids. With the right guidance, they can achieve wonderful things—especially if they want to learn about computer science and programming.

Motivation

It all started in 1996. I remember my dad purchased a computer with Windows 95, and everyone in my family was excited to see what it could do. At the time, my oldest sister was taking after-school IT courses, so she knew more about computers. I remember her telling me how to navigate through files and folders using the MS-DOS command line, and then either through a Basic program or an MS-DOS command I saw something that displayed: “Code Page 437”

When I looked at it, it was like witnessing magical runes on the screen. Then she typed the cls command, which clears the screen in the console, and everything disappeared.

At that moment, it felt like I had just witnessed something magical. I was very excited and wanted to learn more about it. Unfortunately, when my parents enrolled me in after-school IT classes, the instructor was very dull and boring. Every time I went in, I wanted to understand how a computer works, but at the same time, I was trying not to fall asleep. I don’t blame him, explaining computer science isn’t easy, especially to a kid, or making it sound exciting, particularly when teaching low-level concepts.

This is the main reason why I put so much effort into making my previous coding sessions as interesting as possible. Since most kids love to play video games, I like to show them some computer graphics, and then they get excited about it. Once you understand how they want to learn, they can achieve a lot. I had a student in Palo Alto who was 5 years old and understood how to code in C++ very quickly. Just like two other students I had in Milpitas, who already grasped data structures and algorithms.  As I mentioned previously, it takes passion and dedication to make the sessions interesting and engaging. And who knows—perhaps one of my students might develop the newest technology on the market.
